About
Subsistence

SUBSISTENCE is an arts education program designed to close any and all learning gaps for Nashville's emerging artists in an effort to guide them into successful futures in the performing arts.

Our training program is tailored to each individual student and provides education in dance, voice, acting, and professional development. Having worked with students of all ages for over 10 years, and as a former student performer herself, owner Tosha Marie wanted to offer instruction to performing arts students outside of what is offered in their schools. This program exists to give each student their absolute best chance to pursue an arts career beyond high school.

Unlike most traditional studios where the main focus is annual recitals, showcases, or competitions; SUBSISTENCE actively encourages and facilitates performance opportunities outside of our studio. In addition to their quality instruction inside the classroom, SUBSISTENCE students are regularly connected with outside professionals to continue their work and study. SUBSISTENCE students have worked with companies like The Theater Bug, Nashville Repertory Theatre, and Found Movement Group to name a few.

We provide technique based training without the pressure for mandatory performances in house. Rather than forcing students to commit to in-studio events that might conflict with other productions, we want our students out working for themselves. When a student misses class for rehearsal, they have the opportunity to make it up, with out feeling like they are missing important information or letting their classmates and instructors down. We offer both group and 1-on-1 learning opportunities for our students. Class times vary to accommodate rehearsal schedules. We offer multiple levels for each area of study; to make sure every student feels comfortable and can learn with people who have similar experience levels.

All students have the option of participating in our annual showcase. The showcase takes place towards the end of each season and features work created by both our Core Faculty and Guest Instructors. The showcase isn't just a performance for for family and friends, but also invited guests of TMProductions including casting agents, directors, and college/university representatives.
